The Mesa Band Story So Far

David Morgan & Steve Spouse played together for five years in a cover band called ‘The Mugshots’ during which time they traveled extensively throughout the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Their fascination with the Pilbara region continued to grow after their departure in the mid nineties, and they often discussed writing songs about the region, as it had always been a frustration of theirs that other regions of Australia had their own music and the Pilbara region had enjoyed little if any musical exposure.

Therefore, in February 2006 Morgan started the song writing task with the major objective of ensuring the songs reflected the culture of the Pilbara region. With assistance from Spouse ten songs were completed by October 06, and in February 07 they commenced the recording of their self funded debut album ‘Nor West Friends’.

The album was recorded in Sydney and produced by David Holmes who also played lead guitar on the album, and arranged special guest appearances by Mark Oats (Bushwhackers), Pete Northcote (Angels) & Adrian Wallis (Sydney Symphony Orchestra).

The album was launched in Perth in October 07, and in the months that followed the band completed a series of regional tours around Western Australia. The song ‘Kanaji Binbaku’ was a finalist in the 2007 WAMI Regional Song of the Year competition and several of the tracks have been featured in television leisure shows and documentaries.

In February 08, Kevin McGinn and John Mossop joined the Mesa Band on bass guitar and electric piano respectively, and in June they recorded and released a new song called ‘Warlu Way’ which Morgan wrote to support an Australian North West tourism campaign to promote a tourist travel route across the top of Western Australia.
